Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are custom-made coverings that are placed over a damaged or decayed tooth. They serve as a protective layer, restoring the tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are typically made from various materials such as porcelain, metal alloys (like gold), ceramic, or a combination of these materials. The choice depends on factors like durability requirements and aesthetic preferences.

Reasons for Getting a Dental Crown

Here are some common reasons why you may need a dental crown:

Tooth Decay

When tooth decay becomes severe and compromises the structure of your tooth, a dental crown can restore its functionality and appearance.

Cracked or Chipped Teeth

Whether it's due to an injury or biting down on something hard, cracked or chipped teeth can be painful and unsightly. A dental crown can protect the damaged tooth from further harm while improving its aesthetics.

Root Canal Treatment

After undergoing root canal therapy, the affected tooth may become weak and prone to fractures. Placing a dental crown over the treated tooth provides strength and protection.

Misshapen or Discolored Teeth

Dental crowns can enhance the shape, size, and color of misshapen or discolored teeth, giving you a more uniform smile.

Tooth Replacement

If you have missing teeth, dental crowns can be used as part of bridgework or in conjunction with dental implants to close gaps in your smile.

The Dental Crown Procedure and Recovery Process

Getting a dental crown is a fairly straightforward process that can typically be completed in two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any damaged or decayed areas and shaping it to accommodate the crown. An impression of the tooth will also be taken to ensure an accurate fit for the crown.

While waiting for your permanent crown to be made, you will be fitted with a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth. It's important to take care of this temporary restoration by avoiding sticky or hard foods that could dislodge it.

Once your permanent crown is ready, you'll return for the second visit. The dentist will remove the temporary crown and check if the new one fits properly. Any necessary adjustments will be made before permanently cementing it in place.

After getting a dental crown, some patients may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity around the treated tooth. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days as you adjust to having a new restoration in your mouth.
